Port Askaig 16 Year Old

Port Askaig 16 Year Old bottle

70cl, 45.8% ABV

All of Port Askaig’s whiskies that carry age statements are aged in small batches. Port Askaig 16 Year Old is aged predominantly in first fill Bourbon casks, with a small percentage aged in first fill Sherry casks to add more fruit and richness to the whisky.

With the youngest whisky in Port Askaig 16 Year Old from 1999, this expression is more robust than a classic Islay whisky and the peat has been softened by cask ageing.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Honeyed and autumnal - bonfires, dried leaves and crisp, stony smoke hides a layer of muddy peat. There are hints of flowers - raspberry leaf and honeysuckle. A thick and spicy middle, reminiscent of sponge cake batter and marshmallows.

Palate

A silky mouthfeel with a syrupy sweet start is quickly overtaken by flinty smoke and charcoal dust. Zesty lemons and Sherbet Fountains are found in luxurious textures with a hint of violet.

Finish

Long and lingering soot and smoke, with a growing lemony citrus tang giving way to wood ash in a cast-iron stove.

Comment

Well balanced and easy drinking, with enough smoke to satisfy the most ardent peat head while keeping fans of more complex whiskies happy.
