Wednesday 18th September 2019 was a big day, as we celebrated the launch of a brand new rum: Black Tot . Inspired by the centuries-old naval tradition of sourcing and blending rums from the Caribbean, Black Tot brings together three distinctive rums in one multi–layered, un-sweetened harmonious blend with a modern twist.
Wednesday 18th September 2019 was a big day, as we celebrated the launch of a brand new rum: Black Tot by Elixir Distillers.
Inspired by the centuries-old naval tradition of sourcing and blending rums from the Caribbean, the new Black Tot has taken the same origins of classic navy rums but completely changing the end result - fruity, vibrant, complex, unsweetened, rather than rich, heavy and sweet.
Black Tot is open and transparent when it comes to discussing what is in the blend, and brings together three rums with distinctive styles together in one multi–layered, un-sweetened harmonious blend;
- Demerara Rum from Guyana – the cornerstone of blends for their rich and full bodied qualities
- Barbados rum – for elegance and fruitiness.
- Jamaican rum – for tropical fruit and funkiness.
It also bottled at a higher strength to match with the modern palate and customer expectations;
Held at The Victorian Bath House, behind London Liverpool Street Station, the afternoon launch kicked off with an intimate masterclass from Black Tot’s creators, Sukhinder Singh and Oliver Chilton. They talked about the history of the relationship between the Tot and the British Navy, from its slow beginnings all the way up to its abolition on 31st July 1970, known as Black Tot Day.
They also discussed how the Black Tot ‘Last Consignment’ came to fruition, including their quest to source the ceramic demijohns of the fabled original British Navy Rum, which had been sat in old ageing warehouses below the banks of the River Thames for the best part of 40 years.
You know it’s going to be a great afternoon when a tasting kicks off with a piece of liquid history like the ‘Last Consignment.’ We then moved on the dissecting the blend of the new Black Tot Rum and sampling the styles that make up the components of this new release, before tasting the main event: the new Black Tot.
In the evening session guests arrived to welcome drinks, speeches and nibbles, before the custom-built bars opened to serve an amazing menu of signature cocktails with Black Tot at the centre. Each one had been created especially for the event by an all-star team of guest bartenders;
