Vermouth della Regina Rosso

Vermouth della Regina Rosso bottle

75cl, 16.5% ABV

A red-wine based Vermouth di Torino produced according to the authentic recipe of Clemente Chazalettes, which dates back to 1876. Alongside the distinctive wormwood, you may find notes of Piedmontese herbs, marjoram and musk mallow as well as exotic sandalwood and coriander. This Vermouth is named after Queen Margherita who, in 1907, granted to Chazalettes the royal patent and the use of the House of Savoy coat of arms. Della Regina translates from Italian as: ‘of the Queen’.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Sticky sweetness leads, with glacé and maraschino cherries, and plums jumping from the glass. But there is a dark bitterness close behind, with woody wormwood bitterness joined by green leaves. Between the two sits a pool of bittersweet spice.

Palate

Rich and rounded, with the sweetness from the nose rolling immediately across the palate. It stops halfway, beaten back by leafy bitterness and then covered with rich and fruity notes: sweet red grapes and bitter skins; strawberry compote and a pinch of pepper.

Finish

A rich ball of sweetness slowly crumbles, revealing a dark core of bittersweet liquorice pastilles, dark oak and bitter leaves.

Comment

A rich and complex rosso, with the bitterness balanced by sweet notes, but with the focus on the core of fruit and spice.

Imbibe

Chazalettes Rosso della Regina on Imbibe

Burnt caramel, dark chocolate, wormwood, orange peel, worn leather, cinnamon, star anise and bay leaf on the nose, followed by sour cherries and bitterness from wormwood and gentian on the palate. Light bodied with notes of burnt toffee, orange peel, rosemary, caramel sweetness in the background. A whisper of Chinese 5 spice and a gentle chewiness.
